Empirical Record on Conformity and Conduct Essay

Introduction:

Conformity arises when individuals respond to peer- pressure by simply changing their particular behaviour to adapt to what the group of people they're with carry out.

Solomon Asch carried out a study upon conformity in 1951 which in turn addressed the contemplation of conformity and nonconformity due to peer pressure; his research are also relevant to pro-social and anti-social behavior. Solomon Asch's experiment was conducted by having five individuals and they will sit along side each other at a long desk where the experimenter would inquire further which of three vertical lines (called the comparability line) are the same length as the standard range. The first few assessments, all participants gave the same correct solution. The next evaluation, four persons gave the same answer which has been incorrect, the dilemma to get the fifth person was whether he should provide what this individual thinks may be the correct solution or will abide by the previous several participants. Data presented simply by Asch (1955) suggest that 74% of individuals ‘make a mistake' and go along with the group upon at least one event, although 24% of members never conformed (van Iersel et al., 2005).

The aim of this kind of experiment was going to see how a large number of participants could conform and what influenced them to conform. It was hypothesised that the members would adjust as a result of a large number of variables which includes group size, unanimity and individual variations. Independent Variable – the three conditions (refer to outcomes graph 1 below). Conditional Variable – the number of people who looked up (conformed).

Method:

18 random learners looked up (conformed) therefore happening in the research as members. The components used had been pen and paper to record the results. The method used for this experiment was watching how many people would comply with a person or group looking up or at a certain object and what factors influenced the participants to look up.
