A. Non-Verbal Connection

This paper reviews essential issues in cross-cultural connection; verbal connection and non-verbal communication. Spoken communication is described as spoken connection, including the make use of words and intonation to convey meaning. However, nonverbal interaction is " silent” connection, including the usage of gestures, posture, position, eye-to-eye contact, facial expression, and conversational distance.

The issue of nonverbal conversation is related to the teaching of Indonesian to speakers of other languages. The learners studying Indonesian should not only be equipped with chinese itself although also the Indonesian traditions because " ……………to know another's language and not his culture is definitely a good way to produce a fluent mislead of one's self”(Brembeck, Winston: 1977) and " Culture hides much more than it reveals, and strangely enough, what hides, this hides many effectively from its own participants”(Hall, Edward To: 1959).

The paper is going to limit itself to nonverbal communication or speaking devoid of words, not verbal communication. It will set emphasis on the value of nonverbal communication principles, because without them, a real communication can not be executed smoothly and successfully. Furthermore, the paper is also likely to explore the similarities and differences of non-verbal communication between Indonesians and non-Indonesian speakers. By doing comparisons, the learners learning Indonesian will certainly avoid themselves from interpretation nonverbal conversation that is culturally different from their particular.

If we don't understand the non-verbal communication coming from different tradition, it is possible that people can make a oversight of reading the other person improperly. Some forms of nonverbal signals are the same and universal and so they have the same that means or meaning. But , the other forms will vary and the will vary meaning as well, or no meaning in the other culture. Craig Storti in " Foreseeing Out” as quoted by simply Wienchecki (1999) mentions 3 main categories of non-verbal communication in the cross-cultural context. These are generally: a. Non-verbal behaviours which in turn exist is likely to culture and in the target culture which have the same meaning in both cultures. b. Non-verbal behaviours which in turn exist in both cultures, but that are assigned diverse meanings in the two civilizations. c. nonverbal behaviours which have meaning in one culture but no meaning at all inside the target dialect.

In addition , as verbal vocabulary differs by culture to culture, the nonverbal vocabulary may also vary. One touch may be prevalent in a selected country and have a clear presentation, it may be meaningless in another culture or even provide an opposite that means. Take, for example , the cultural interpretations and implications of hand gestures, the band gesture, the thumb-up and V signal (Pease, Allan: 1990). r

The question now could be " Which will communication is usually practiced more in our everyday life? ” Is it verbal interaction or nonverbal communication? Albert Mehrabian because quoted as well by Pease found the fact that total impact of a communication is about several percent mental (words only) and 32 percent expressive (including possible vocal tone, inflection, and also other sounds) and 55 percent non-verbal. One study also required for the United States demonstrated that 93 percent of your message was transmitted by the speaker's possible vocal tone and cosmetic expressions. Just 7 percent of the individual's attitude was conveyed by words. Obviously, we exhibit our emotions and perceptions more non-verbally than verbally (Adelman and Levine: 1993).
